This presentation analyzes gender-discriminatory structures inherent in Korean Buddhism, by focusing on the Jogye Order, the largest Buddhist Order in Korea.
Gender-discriminatory structures in Buddhism are found in the 4
parts: the Jogye Order‘s law, doctrine, practices, and precepts(esp.
The Eight Grave Rules).
1) The Jogye Order‘s Law: developed and legislated(1962) by the
Order itself, works as an operating guideline for Jogye order’s
members.
2) Doctrine: Buddha’s teaching from(2,700 years ago) treated all
human beings equally, and it was closely related to Buddhist’s
lives, thoughts, and moral level.
3) Buddhist’s Practices: Buddhists’ daily and religious lives, and the
Jogye order’s Law influences practices of the lay people as well as
bhikkus and bihkkunis.
4) Precepts: provide basic value for the Law of Jogye order that
both practitioners and lay people, in order to achieve
enlightenment.
